Stories of Hope and Courage: Nicole

“Nicole” Stories of Hope and Courage: Homelessness in the ShowMe State from Sophia Keskey on Vimeo.

Homelessness and poverty have long since been criminalized by the United States’ legal system. The St. Louis region is no exception. Despite recent efforts by non-profits and the Division of Homeless Services, the homeless are routinely arrested for loitering and trespassing when trying to find relief from the weather.  While we don’t have anti-homeless spikes, there are bench dividers at bus stops so the homeless cannot lie down. In addition, the Municipal Court System criminalizes not only homelessness, but also poverty, incarcerating individuals for inability to pay fines.Nicole Bolden, an ArchCity Defenders client, talks about her experiences and how the criminalization of her poverty has lifelong ramifications.
