INTERNSHIPS

With a strong belief in giving students the opportunity to experience and learn client-centered, holistic advocacy, ArchCity Defenders provides internship opportunities for law students, social work students and undergraduates.

General Information on Internships

Rising 2L:
While continuing to provide holistic legal advocacy to the indigent in St. Louis, ArchCity Defenders is working toward changing the criminal legal system in the St. Louis region on a large scale.  One way we are advancing our agenda is through the use of impact litigation.  In order to effectively file and argue civil rights cases, it is necessary to have extensive knowledge of legal precedents, state and federal statutes, and county and local ordinances.  Interns will perform research to bolster our understanding and draft memos synthesizing their findings for senior attorneys.  Although impact litigation has become one effective tool for change, the ArchCity Defenders are still dedicated to representing our clients and changing the lives of our clients on an individual basis.  To this end, interns are expected to assist in direct representation. Interns will perform intake interviews with potential clients, attend court proceedings with senior attorneys, and draft motions for attorney use in court proceedings.  Interns must have excellent legal research and writing skills, be comfortable communicating and interacting with clients and potential clients, and be flexible to meet the needs of the organization as goals change.

Rising 3L:
3L students will have the opportunity to be more involved in direct client representation.  Missouri offers law students who have completed 3 semester of classes to become Rule 13 certified, which allows them to represent individuals with the oversight of a supervising attorney.  This allows 3Ls to have more responsibility with regard to direct client representation, including ability to represent them in court by way of negotiating with prosecuting attorneys, presenting oral arguments during hearings, and overseeing plea deals.

Both 2Ls and 3Ls will have opportunities to work in conjunction with local organizing and advocacy groups working to promote racial and economic equity in the region.

Social Work Students:
Our social work interns come to us from Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited programs during the school year. Both BSW and MSW students are considered. Currently we are working with practicum students from the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Social work students will work along side direct services attorneys providing assistance and support in assessing client needs and then coordinating and getting clients connected to the services they need. Special projects on issues of policy reform and research on potential client populations will also be available through the year. MSW students will have opportunities to work in conjunction with local organizing and advocacy groups working to promote racial and economic equity in the region.

Media Students:

Media interns come to us from accredited college and universities during the school year. Both BSW and MSW students are considered. Media interns will work within the Communications Department to assist with overarching goals and objectives as it relates to media outreach, social media, graphic design and content development. Media interns will have an opportunity to collaborate with attorneys and interns at ArchCity Defenders, as well as local organizers and advocates, on designated media campaigns. We’re looking for folks who are creative, motivated and have a strong appreciation for ArchCity Defenders’ mission.  Portfolio, resume and cover letter may be directed to Rebecca Gorley via email: rgorley@archcitydefenders.org.
