ArchCity Defenders and Partners Kick Off Freedom Summer Campaign on Juneteenth

St. Louis, Mo – June 3, 2024

This summer marks the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer, as well as the 10th anniversary of the Ferguson Uprising following the killing of Michael Brown Jr. This year is also a critical moment in history, with consequential elections where voters will make decisions that will impact our communities for generations to come. In this context, ArchCity Defenders (ACD) and community partners will host a series of events focused on political education and advocacy to create a space for service, activation, and recommitment to justice and transformation in the region.

What: Juneteenth Kickoff to Freedom Summer STL

  • ACD and community partners will host a Juneteenth celebration featuring:
    • Voter registration
    • Voter rights information
    • Civics training
    • Legal services, including criminal record expungement support and counseling on housing-related issues
  • This is the first in a series of three nearly identical Freedom Summer STL events taking place in various locations across St. Louis City and County. The final event will be a march and rally in August.

Registration is not required but you can find more information online at:

If you are an organization interested in participating in the Resource Fair or are an individual interested in volunteering, please complete the online form (same as above).

Who: Freedom Summer STL is a collaboration between ArchCity Defenders, Action St. Louis, Freedom Community Center, Missouri Voter Protection Coalition, Tenants Transforming Greater St. Louis (formerly Homes for All), and other grassroots community partners. The Juneteenth Kickoff is a joint celebration with Saint John’s United Church of Christ (The Beloved Community), Faith for Justice, and Freedom Arts & Education Center.

When: Wednesday, June 19 from 11am to 3pm.

Where: Fairground Park

Why: Far too many people in our region are experiencing housing and economic insecurity at some of the worst levels we have seen in recent times. They often find themselves moving through multiple crises and lack information, resources, and support to engage with their local governments beyond policing and courts. Freedom Summer STL aims to ensure that information and resources can be easily accessed in a singular setting so that community members have the tools needed to impact policy change.
